ART FOR THE HOLIDAYS

FOUR PERSON EXHIBITION AT
GALERIE ATTIENETTE

Internationally acclaimed pastelist, Christina Debarry, captures the elusive moods of landscapes in her recent work on view in the four person show opening December 9 at the new Galerie Attienette in uptown Hoboken. The award winning artist and former president of the Pastel Society of America shares the space with New Jersey artist Tom James.  James’s work is included in the collections of celebrity and corporate clients, and reflects his ability to capture light on canvas. Also in the exhibition is the work of area artist Chris Kappmeier, known for his vibrant scenes of New Jersey urban landscapes. The dynamic mix is completed with the work of Myra Williamson,  acclaimed artist with New Orleans roots.  The exhibition will be on view from December 9 – March 2, and the participating artists will be present at the opening reception slated for Sunday December 9, 2007 between 12:00 - 2:00 PM.

Williamson will be showcasing her work from her new “Tough Cookies” series which pays homage to her love of all things New Orleans. Since Katrina, the artist has resided and worked in Jersey City.  The title “Tough Cookies” refers to the issue of survival after the storm, and all the pieces include the New Orleans signature symbol of a fleur-de-lis. Debarry, a master pastelist, will be debuting several new evocative landscapes, in addition to her atmospheric and dramatic “Water Tower” image.

Poetic strains traced to impressionistic influences may be seen in Tom James' abstract work. As one critic has remarked, “his work is guided by his heart and his emotions.”  Combined with training and inspiration, the artist comments that he “hopes to receive what creation sends to me, to be in the flow. I am a vessel to receive inspiration and to paint on canvas.”  The fourth artist in the exhibition, Chris Kappmeier, represents a different and unique style of work. The raw authenticity of cityscapes is evident in his work, and the paintings burst with specs and dashes of paint that build to capture city vistas from manipulated perspectives.

Kappmeier’s thickly painted landscapes are in contrast to Debarry’s soft and blended pastel colors. Tom James abstracts, and Myra Williamson’s still life images offer the viewer yet another opportunity to see how each artist creates their own world of images and where unique artistic statements are expressed.
