Color, Light and Caricature:
A Three-Man Show at Galerie Attienette
Hoboken,
New Jersey –
This year, spring arrives in a splash of color, light
and caricature at Galerie Attienette. Art Across the
Hudson presents a three-man show that plays with our
sense of reality. Works exhibited dance between surreal
landscapes, larger-than-life characters and Mother
Nature’s own unique interplay of light and elements.
Brazilian artist, Duda Penteado paints Technicolor
landscapes in his series “In Search of Paradise.”
Freckled with spiritual allusions, his paintings weave
into one another and out again, a progression of
dreamscapes, of symbols and saturated color. His works
evoke the magical realism which pervades South American
literature and art. There is a sense of familiarity in
the players and the scene: but something gives us pause.
Is it the symbolism which produces this response, as it
diffuses through our subconscious?
Charles Bartholf explores the relationship between light
and materials such as wood, agate, glass and metal in
his unique light sculptures. Bartholf stresses the
importance of “being in the moment” and truly
experiencing the creative process which renders his
sculptures. His own process is spiritual and full of
discovery: by combining color, light, texture and
various media he brings the elements to life.
In contrast to these surreal landscapes and sculptures,
artist Leandro Velasco Pardo’s work focuses on the
figurative. He depicts the farcical nature of our
being—our tendency toward excess—in his Botero-esque
paintings of colorful men and women. The characters have
personalities large and loud enough to match their
physical attributes. Internationally known for his
portraiture, Velasco Pardo’s paintings shine while
tacitly poking fun.
